When an anonymous letter arrives from Venice on the eve of Carnevale, promising Alexander the adventure he dreams of and more, he doesn’t know if “The Buffalo” is playing another trick on him, or if his bad luck is finally changing…

So when a series of strange “signs” appear, Alexander doesn’t hesitate. He sets off for Venice, determined to make good on his last promise to his father: that if adventure knocked, he would answer.

Along the way, he meets Lizzy, a fierce girl gondolier who helps him locate the letter’s sender—a mysterious shop owner named ‘C’ who reveals the shocking truth: a powerful Sorceress from the distant past has cursed Venice using Ancient Magic, and the only way to ensure the city (and a part of everyone’s soul who has ever visited) isn’t destroyed, is to go back in time and prevent the spell from being cast.

But there’s a catch: a magic mask is the key to walking the tightrope between worlds, and Alexander is the only one it will work for.

Blinded by a desire to fulfill his promise, Alexander swallows his fear and travels back in time to the Ancient World. Only things get even more complicated when Lizzy and then Waldorf show up. Working together, the trio does their best to navigate their strange new surroundings and unravel the mystery surrounding the Sorceress’s curse.

As their quest grows increasingly dangerous, Alexander begins to question whether he really is the adventurer he’d believed, much less capable of saving Venice. It’s not until he must decide whether or not to take on the Sorceress himself that he realizes he may have held the key to defeating her all along.
